Civil Rights Group and Black Developer Partner to Employ Young Black Men
MEMPHIS, Tenn., March 31 /PRNewswire/ — The Southern Christian Leadership
Conference/Memphis (SCLC) and CitiRise Redevelopment, LLC have joined forces
to form “Saving Young Black Men, One Job At a Time,” an initiative that will
reduce joblessness among young black men in the city of Memphis.
“We’re proud to team with CitiRise on such an important project,” said
Rev. Dwight Montgomery, president of SCLC Memphis. “Empowerment of young men
is a major part of our organization’s six-point action agenda and CitiRise has
come forth with an excellent plan.”
Recent studies show that an increasing number of poorly educated black men
are becoming more disconnected from mainstream society. Together SCLC/Memphis
and CitiRise will recruit and train unemployed young black men in the
construction trade. This partnership will target under educated, unskilled
and formerly incarcerated young men.
According to James Webb, CEO of CitiRise, “We don’t just renovate
distressed houses; we renovate the lives of people. This program will not only
teach young black men skills that will make them employable, it also will
build confidence and a desire to be more productive in society.”
As part of its mission, SCLC Memphis is committed to economic stability
and wealth-building. This partnership supports their mission by reaching out
and providing employment in inner cities where the need is greatest. In the
process, CitiRise makes employment a reality and homeownership a possibility.
Rev. James Robinson, founding member of the National Association of
Resident Management Corp. said, “By hiring the ‘hard to employ’ young men to
rebuild and revitalize neighborhoods, CitiRise is rebuilding communities and
lives. There’s nothing that boosts one’s self esteem more than being able to
provide for family and being credited with rebuilding one’s own community.”
Today’s announcement kicks off a week of activities. On Tuesday, April 4,
2006 at 1:30 pm, SCLC Memphis will host a luncheon commemorating the
assassination of Dr. King and honoring the Memphis Baptist Ministerial
Association. On Thursday, April 6, CitiRise will host an open house and job
recruitment fair at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Educational and Cultural
Center.
